Organon's NuvaRing

NuvaRing is a latex free vaginal ring contraceptive containing both etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol, a metabolite of desogestrel. The first contraceptive to contain both hormones, NuvaRing was approved by the FDA in 2001. NuvaRing is designed to prevent pregnancy by releasing hormones over a 21 day period into the wall of the vagina and bloodstream. Idealy these hormones prevent ovulation, prevent sperm penetration, and prevent sperm implantation. NuvaRing is considered a third generation contraceptive because it contains desogestrel.

Currently NuvaRing packages do not report potential health risks but instead inform that studies suggest that adverse reactions have been associated with NuvaRing. The label also states that safety has not been studied relating to third generation contraceptives containing desogestrel. In 2003 The New England Journal of Medicine reported that desogestrel in NuvaRing can increase the risk of blood clots in the first year of use by a factor of 1.5 to 1.8. Also reported is that the use of NuvaRing can lead to other serious conditions such as strokes, heart attacks, pulmonary embolism, and deep vein thrombosis if not treated.
